Governors under the aegis of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) on Tuesday visited Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to commiserate with him and the people of Lagos State over the recent destruction of public and private properties in the State in the aftermath of the youth protests.

Speaking to journalists after a closed door session with Governor Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina, the chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Kebbi State Governor, Senator Atiku Bagudu, on behalf of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for demonstrating leadership during the protests.

The Progressives Governors Forum delegation to Lagos State comprised Bagudu; Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni; Chairman, Northern Governors’ Forum and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong and Jigawa State Governor, Muhammed Badaru.

Governor Bagudu said the APC governors are committed to good governance and making life comfortable for youths in Nigeria. “We want our young men and women to have fulfilling jobs and opportunities both locally and internationally. But this will take continuous engagement and dialogue,” he said.

The PGF chairman said they decided to visit Governor Sanwo-Olu to encourage him and his team and to further show solidarity with the people of Lagos State.

He said: “We come to encourage our colleague and his team and to further show solidarity with the people of Lagos that we are all in it together. This evening Governor Sanwo-Olu showed us some of the pictures of some of the devastating damages that were caused by the violence. And it is very clear that violence does not solve any problem; it compounds it.

“Today Lagos has further taken a loss because of that violence that has attacked everything; police stations, cultural institutions, two palaces and public facilities, loss of lives and other incidents. It is now very clear that the wise people of Lagos and all of us have known better that yes, our young persons have the right to express their feelings, we have to dialogue with them. But also as ambassadors of the family at different respective families and parents, we also have to appreciate that we are in it all together.

“You are not alone; we support them. We went to give them the support of a united strong country so that they can go into the world with pride. But they have seen how nobility of any course can be overtaken by those who otherwise have agendas that are contrary to what they thought they are out to achieve.

“So, I believe that there is a lesson for all of us and as a country, we need to do more quickly. We are doing well but this is a course that we must do more. In the last six years, Nigeria has had one of the most devastating slow down in the economic activities because of the combination of commodity prices collapse, which is further aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic in the country. But yet Nigeria’s response has led to a drop in the GDP by less than seven per cent, which is one of the best in Africa and indeed in the world. There are countries where slowdown in the economy activity has been close to 40 per cent per quarter with unemployment.”

The Progressives Governors’ Forum also commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership in Lagos State during the protests. “We encourage our brother and commend him for the leadership he demonstrated visiting all the hospitals. He was with the youths; he presented their requests to Mr. President. He mobilised his team to respond as kindly, gently and energetically as possible. We must appreciate him.

“He has remained committed till date. The panel (Judicial Panel of Enquiry) he set up is making progress and they are independent. The truth is coming out gradually; it is evolving. So we encourage him. We appreciate the people of Lagos and we are glad that when we came in today, we saw economic activities, the resilience of Lagosians moving in. That is quite commendable and we believe that Lagos will get back its groove and mobilise the nation,” the Governors said.

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has attributed the ground-breaking success of the nation’s telecom regulatory agency, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to the quality of leadership the regulatory body enjoys. 

Speaking while receiving the Board of Commissioners of NCC, led by its Chairman, Prof Adeolu Akande on Monday, November 16, 2020, the monarch also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for reappointing the Executive Vice Chairman of the regulatory body, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta after a highly-successful first five-year tenure as NCC’s helmsman.

“Indeed, the NCC has been playing a pivotal role in regulating and developing the telecommunications sector in the country, and this fact is well established and cannot be overemphasized. I, therefore, commend the leadership and pray for more successes for the Commission,” he noted.

Putting it more into perspective, Bayero observed that “wherever you see success, you don’t need to search further than the leadership for the reason. We thank God, who gave us President Buhari for  giving us  Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami as the Minister, and we are grateful to the President for reappointing Prof. Danbatta to continue with the good job he’s been doing.”

The Emir, who wished the Board of the Commission a fruitful deliberation during its retreat in the ancient city, however, charged the members to come up with resolutions that would have profound impacts on Nigerian people.

Earlier, Danbatta told the Emir that the board chose Kano again for its retreat because of the unmatched hospitality it received from the state during its previous retreat last year. 

He said the board found it necessary to pay the courtesy visit to the monarch and seek his blessing before the commencement of the retreat.

“We had this retreat last year here in Kano and decided to come again. But as it’s the tradition, we cannot come to Kano without coming here to seek your permission and blessing in order to start the retreat. Your Highness, we feel we must come here and show respect because we hold this institution in highest esteem,” he pointed out. 

Members of the board, who accompanied the Chairman and the EVC to the palace were: the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services,  Engr. Ubale Maska; the Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Barr. Adeleke Adewolu, and Mr. Clement Baiye.

PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES NIGERIAN STUDENTS FOR EMERGING FIRST POSITION IN THE 2020 HUAWEI GLOBAL ICT COMPETITION


Team Nigeria, comprising of some Nigerian students from the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and University of Port Harcourt, have won the grand first place position out of over 150,000 other students who participated in the Cloud and Network examination at the 2020 Huawei ICT Competition. The students were honored for their achievement at an online awards ceremony hosted from the Huawei Headquarters in China.


The closing award ceremony event which held on the 14th of November, 2020 at the Huawei Nigeria (Abuja) office was attended by the representative of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), Mr. Nasir Sa’idu Adhama, Special Assistant on Youth & Students Affairs, the representative of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, Dr. Abimbola Alale, the Managing Director/CEO, NIGCOMSAT, the representative of the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC, some university Vice Chancellors and representatives, Huawei management staff, the award-winning students, instructors, parents and the media.


This excellent performance is an outstanding improvement from last year in which Team Nigeria had emerged third position in the same global competition. This shows the level of improvement Nigeria has made in its knowledge of ICT in just one year.

The Huawei ICT competition which was established to foster ICT learning in Africa and bridge the gap between theoretical study and practical industry experience typically comprises of a national preliminary contest, regional semi-final and a Global final. This global victory by these Nigerian students was therefore preceded by a successful campaign at both the national finals which held on December 10th 2019 and had over 23,000 Nigerian students in the contest and the Sub-Saharan Africa Region ICT Competition finals which held on September 10th and 11th, 2020, featuring 123 student-talents from 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, divided into 41 teams (28 network track and 13 cloud track teams), to determine those who will be selected to participate the Huawei Global ICT Competition finals.


The students who were excited to emerge first place after over 10 months of consistent hard work felt proud of their achievement for themselves, for their families and for the nation. Speaking at the ceremony, the students’ representative, Hamza Atabor said “I will like to show my gratitude to Huawei, my Vice Chancellor, my instructors, team mates and my family for this great opportunity. This journey with Huawei came with benefits such as professional certification in the field of interest. I am now HCIP certified in the field of Routing and Switching and in a few months I will attain an extra level certification.”

As part of the federal government commitment to galvanize practical initiatives that would enhance the implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, NDEPS especially in the areas of innovations, digital jobs and wealth creation, the Federal Government has commissioned a multi-million naira National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

The Centre, which was built by National Information Technology Development Agency, (NITDA) is to provide a robust platform for achieving a National Digital Economy for Nigeria through digital literacy and skill development, innovation in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, (AI), Internet of Things, (IoT) Innovation driven Research and Development as well as harnessing the power of Discovery, Incubation And Acceleration (DIA) would support innovators in making their businesses more competitive through speeding up development and uptake of digital innovations.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami who commissioned the centre on behalf of the Federal Government maintained that the centre is central to National Digital Economy Policy for a Digital Nigeria and is in alignment with the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari on job creation and economic diversification.

According to the Minister, the Center will serve as a leading hub of innovation, research and development, knowledge transfer and training in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, AI Robotics and other emerging technology. He added that “Our adoption of regulatory sandbox frameworks for testing technology in a controlled environment will enable the Centre accelerate the progress we are making in the development of our digital economy.

While advocating for more emphasis on skill acquisition among Nigerians, the minister maintained that critical and soft skills have potential to resolve many challenges the nation is facing today. “The centre is not to solve our today’s challenges but to look at what future challenges would be and provide solutions to it. We have amended the service of the Centre to accommodate the directive of our boss, President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Economy that is why we come up with policies that will ignite digital economy,” he added.

Dr Pantami urged Nigeria to prepare to take position in the emerging digital economy especially in the area of artificial intelligence which would have impact on other sector like healthcare, financial service manufacturing and many others adding that it would translate into a significant global economic impact for the country.

He said, “It is predicted that by the year 2025, Artificial Intelligence will be a 190 USD business. 83 percent of companies are also reported to state that Artificial is their strategic priority for the future. 1,543 AI start up raised 10 billion USD in funding in 2017. AI has a significant impact in all sectors and has played a very important role in the fight against COVID 19.”

The minister while expressing confidence that the centre would engage the youths, support in the diversification of the economy, create more jobs and inspire digital entrepreneurship directed the NITDA, the custodian of the Centre to be responsible for its management and always furnish the office of the minister the monthly report of activities of the centre.

Earlier in his welcome remark, the NITDA Director general, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi stated that the “centre is built to foster the development of emerging technologies in preparing Nigeria for the Fourth Industrial Revolution which is in tandem with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy.

He added that “The project is one among many of our developmental programmes in accordance with NITDA’s core mandate of facilitating the growth of Information technology development in Nigeria. We are focused on providing support for viable innovation with socio economic impact as well as a level playing field for all Nigeria to thrive in.”

While reiterating the potentials of the Artificial Intelligence to leapfrog the nation’s economy to a desirable level that would add great value to the Gross Domestic Product, the DG said developing countries like Nigeria have potential to add between 20 billion USD to 60 billion USD to the GDP in 10 years. “As we enter the age of advanced technological breakthrough such as Artificial Intelligence. Nigeria cannot be left out in harnessing the advantages of AI. Robotics and other emerging technologies.

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Muhammad Bello who was the chairman of the occasion said the construction of the centre is a tremendous transformation taken place I digital economy.


He said the center which is the first public sector driven centre would open the space for digital economy that would be beneficial to Nigerians.

The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics is equipped with facilities which include; Digital Innovation Lab, Market-space and Fabrication Lab Infrastructure, Printed Circuit Board Facilities, 3D Printer, Abuja Massachusetts Institute of Technology Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (MIT-REAP) office, Co-Working Space for Start-ups, Training Facilities and Office for ICT Innovation and Entrepreneurship/Office for Nigeria Content in ICT.

President Buhari Calls For Support Of Traditional Rulers In Addressing Demands Of Nigerian Youths

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja emphasized the imperative of support of traditional rulers in the administration’s determination to address the demands of the country’s youths.

At a meeting in the State House with a delegation of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji (Dr) Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the President told the royal fathers that “we have heard the loud cries of our youth and children, and we are attending to their concerns.”

He, however, stressed that “To succeed in all of this, we would require your support and voice to help amplify the message. Your proximity to the people places you in a unique position to communicate and ensure that our response is targeted and impactful.”

Describing their “role as guardians of our traditional values and culture” as most critical, the President urged them not to compromise their neutrality “because this is what significantly confers on you, your moral authority and legitimacy.”

 According to President Buhari, his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, would lead senior government officials to various parts of the country “and directly engage with you as part of this process. He will be reporting back to me on your various perspectives.

“I want to once again thank you for the role you all have played to calm down our youth with wisdom and authority. By instilling hope and keeping the peace, you have rendered the country great service.”

While warning that “we cannot allow anybody or group to threaten the peace or sabotage these efforts,” the President restated that “strong, transparent efforts are underway to address those rogue elements of the Nigerian Police Force. Simultaneously, the Nigerian Police Force will also undergo much needed reform that covers welfare, working conditions, and code of conduct. That will usher in a more professional workforce.”

Recognizing the primary and important role of the monarchs in helping maintain peace and security in the country, the President expressed delight at their visit “given all that has happened recently in our country.”

While receiving the recommendations of the traditional rulers, he promised to study them and take appropriate action.

President Buhari had earlier drawn the attention of the eminent delegation to the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic on the world.

“We find ourselves in very turbulent times, with a global health pandemic that has been incredibly challenging. Economies have been crippled as the response to the pandemic has forced businesses to shut down or devise new means of transacting. For a country like ours, with a large informal economy, our citizens have been particularly hit.”

He noted, however, that his administration has “designed various schemes and taken many measures to soften the impact, despite our own revenue struggles as government,” while recognizing that “more needs to be done to cater to our fellow citizens, not just those in the urban areas but also those in rural areas.”

According to President Buhari, “I am also fully aware that our strong farming belts have been impacted by floods. While we have seen record levels of farm outputs and increased level of fertilizer utilization, government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and its agencies is working on how to help bring these farmers some relief.”

Admitting the enormity of these challenges and “our growing youth population,” the President declared:

“There is no hiding place regarding how we should address insecurity concerns, youth unemployment, job creation, boosting industrialization and preparing for a transition into a digital economy.”

Remarks were made by the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife, His Royal Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, while two foremost traditional rulers representing each geo-political zone also attended the meeting.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu on Friday flagged off the 2020 Polio Vaccination Exercise for children in five Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the State, vowing that the State Government would continue to implement various initiatives to safeguard the health of residents.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Secretariat Complex of Somolu Local Government, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said that although Nigeria had been certified polio-free, conscious efforts must be put in place to ward off the threat of the virus which, according to her, necessitated the vaccination exercise.

In her words: “This Polio free status can only be maintained by strengthening our routine immunisation services and regular surveillance activity in our communities for both wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses and acute flaccid paralysis”.

“We should also bear in mind that few other countries which are yet to be certified free of poliovirus will still constitute a threat to the whole world. Therefore, the need for us as a nation to continue with our vaccination strategy in order to improve the health of our children and guarantee their survival to economically viable adults cannot be overemphasised”, she said.

The First Lady commended health workers for their service to humanity despite the challenges so far witnessed this year, especially with regards to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

While reiterating the commitment of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ramp up healthcare, the First Lady urged residents, especially parents and guardians, to take advantage of the vaccination exercise to protect their children and wards against the virus.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Olugbemiga Aina said it is essential for people to ensure that eligible children within communities are adequately vaccinated, adding “We must ensure that our communities are rid of the virus because as long as wild poliovirus is still in circulation in some countries, the whole world remains at risk”.

He said that during the exercise, vaccination teams would visit residential homes, schools, churches, mosques, gated estates and all public places where eligible children will be vaccinated.

The representatives of the Federal Government, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) commended the State Government for taking the lead in healthcare initiatives, especially to protect children.

The first round of the vaccination holds from November 14 to 17, while the second round will take place between December 12 and 15, 2020 in Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Somolu and Surulere.

Recall that the African Regional Commission had formally declared Nigeria Polio free on 25th August 2020, but the vaccination exercise was initiated as a result of environmental circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) detected at Makoko, Asegere Market in Lagos Mainland in September.

Through the exercise, children between 0 – 5 years would be vaccinated with two drops of oral polio vaccine, regardless of their previous immunisation status, to prevent poliomyelitis that may result in paralysis of the limbs or death.
