We are also aware of news aired by some radio stations in Rivers State by one Chijioke Ihunwo who claims to be the Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria in Rivers State threatening to mobilise Rivers Youths under the NYCN to attack members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress during their planned.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria wish to state categorically as follows:
That Chijioke Ihunwo is not the Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria in Rivers State.
That National Youth Council of Nigeria can not and will not in anyway stop or attempt to stop a peaceful protest of any kind include the proposed one by NLC and TUC.
That the cry of the NLC and TUC is for the interest of the Nigeria Youths and therefore, we will not betray the confidence repose on Nigeria Youths.
That Rivers people should disregard anything from Chijioke Ihunwo as he is not speaking on the authority of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter.
That we plead with the leadership of the NLC and TUC not to take the statement of Chijioke Ihunwo as the position of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.
With respect to the facts stated above, we, hereby urge all Youths of Rivers State to be law abiding while the protest last.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta at the weekend hosted an interactive session with senior media chiefs from the mainstream and online media community where he gave impressive accounts of his stewardship as the Chief Telecoms Regulator in the last five years.
The event, held at the NCC’s Communications and Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja, was attended by the top-notch of the fourth estate of the realm both physically and virtually, as well as the senior management of the Commission, including the Executive Commissioner Stakeholder Management, Adeleke Adewolu.
Addressing the forum, Danbatta, who was recently reappointed for another five years in office following the expiration of his first term in August 2015, eloquently enunciated his major policy initiatives that have produced record broadband penetration and enhanced the growth in the telecoms sector, especially in the contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He also reeled out NCC’s regulatory priority areas for the next five years to include facilitating the attainment of 70 per cent broadband penetration by 2025; consumer protection and empowerment; and consolidation of spectrum trading to ensure maximum and efficient usage of available frequencies.
Other areas of focus, according to him, will include continuous SIM registration audit to provide security and curtail incidences of banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery; creation of Emergency Communications Centres (ECCs) in more states of the federation; and execution of the counterpart funding agreements with the licensed Infrastructure companies (InfraCos) to facilitate the digital transformation of the economy.
Speaking on his achievements in the last five years, Danbatta said that the diligent implementation of NCC’s Strategic Vision Plan (SVP), which focused on the 8-Point Agenda, has helped to lift broadband penetration from 6 per cent in 2015 to 42.02 per cent by July, 2020. The sector’s contribution to GDP increased from 8.50 per cent in 2015 to 14.30 per cent in the second quarter of 2020. In financial terms, Danbatta said the Q2 2020 contribution translates to N2.272 trillion.
He noted that when he came on board five years ago, 217 access gap clusters were identified in the country affecting 40 million Nigerians without access to telecoms services. “But today, we have reduced the access gap clusters to 114 with 15 million of the 40 million digitally excluded Nigerians now having access to telecoms services. We are committed to addressing the remaining access gap clusters, which are areas outside the frontier of economic viability to ensure the remaining 25 million Nigerians have access,” he said.
Similarly, Danbatta said on assumption of office, there were 47,000 kilometers of fibre optic cables laid across the country. However, five years after, as a result of regulatory focus, there are now 54,725 kilometers of fibre cables laid across the country through the efforts of some private companies in the sector.
“In line with the Federal Government’s target, an additional 120,000 kilometers of fibre are being planned over the next four years. In this regard, the NCC is working on last-mile connectivity to different parts of the country through leveraging the 40 terabyte capacity of five submarine cables on the coastal shores of Nigeria,” he said.
Danbatta pointed out that the licensing of six Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos) to deploy fibre infrastructure across the six-geo political zones will also help to galvanise increased connectivity. “This will also bring about a reduction in cost of data from N1000, per gigabyte of data to around N390 with broadband penetration target of 70 per cent to cover 90 per cent of the population within the next five years as contained in the new Nigerian National Broadband Plan (2020-2025),” the EVC said.
Danbatta, however, noted that “we cannot have pervasive broadband with only 37,000 4G-enabled Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) of the total 50,000 BTS currently in the country. We need more next-generation technologies as we work through addressing infrastructure deficit occasioned by the spike in data usage in the country.”
In this regard, the EVC said the 5G trial conducted by the NCC in 2019 and its eventual safe deployment in the country will increase data speed and boost efficiency in service experience for the consumers.
On capital importation, the EVC said in 2015, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the telecom sector stood at $1 billion but declined to $212 million by 2018. He, however, noted that through regulatory efforts, the FDI in the sector has picked up again reaching $930 million according to recent figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Danbatta also talked about the various consumer-centric initiatives his leadership has put in place to strengthen consumer protection and empowerment in the last five years. These include the declaration of 2017 as the Year of the Consumer, the introduction of the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) 2442 Short Code, the introduction of the NCC toll-free Number 622; the stringent provisions of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) Registration Guidelines, issuance of direction on forceful subscription and data roll-over, among others.
Such initiatives, According to Danbatta, also include the constitution of a multi-sectoral committee on e-fraud, revision of the consumer complaints, and service level agreements (CC/SLA) for prompt resolution of consumer complaints by the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
He reiterated NCC’s commitment towards delivering on its mandate of ensuring the quality of service to the consumers, driving investment, and boosting healthy competition in the industry as enshrined in the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA), 2003.
Danbatta lauded the role of the media in the reportage of the telecom sector over the years and urged the practitioners to continue to be objective and constructive in their coverage of the activities of the Commission and that of its licensees.

The need to protect minors and children today has become more imperative, considering the rising cases of child abuses, domestic violence, wards maltreatment and the rampant cases of “househelps” being enslaved by their madams in the country. The fight against these social vices has deepened with the coming of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) known as Save And Secure the Child Initiative (SASCI), which has been doing a lot of intervention works. The NGO is slated to be launched formally by the ending of September across states of the federation.
Speaking to the media, Kene Ikwunne, The founder of Save And Secure The Child Initiative (SASCI), said that they are going to work in tandem with global best practices that protects the children such as The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which in a nutshell is a “Legal Ban On Violence Against Chldren.” These legal bans include corporal punishment, harmful traditional practices, early and forced marriages, female genital mutilation, honour crimes and sexual violence. Also, Kene stated that the NGO will also work with local laws such as Section 21 of the Nigerian Constitution (Criminal Code).
According to UNICEF, six out of ten children experience some forms of abuse or the other ranging from emotional, physical and most alarming is sexual abuse. A situation that the NGO is hoping to intervene. On what made him to float such an NGO, Kene stated “I think I am focusing into children because they are the future of tomorrow. The first law of nature is self-preservation, this means there should be need to survive. We have to ensure that our kids are taken good care of in line with our cultural mandate not global because if we fail to take care of these kids, it means that we are treading in a perilous path where our survival as a people, culture and community would be in jeopardy. Thirdly, the rate of child abuse in our society today is alarming. The ones that are scattered all over the social media platforms is just few noted cases, lots of cases were never reported or not even captured at all.” On what the NGO has achieved and its mission, Kene added that “We have 2020 Roadmap for the NGO. We are on the way to building the largest community of volunteers in Nigeria, this is just to raise a strong and deafening voice for the Nigeria child. We are already presence in 21 states including the FCT Abuja. Handling child abuse cases already. Like the child in Kaduna that was maltreated by a deaconess, has been taking up by this initiative for her school bills to university level, done through our volunteer based outside Nigeria. So as this last quarter of the year elapse, Nigeria will see a massive campaign and strong voice Against Child Abuse.”

The guests had gone and we had pulled off our wedding clothes. I was just plotting the best route to follow to paradise when I realized that my wife was pensive.

As a young girl, my wife loved God and feared hell. She became born again very early and feared premarital pregnancy, abortion, sexually transmitted diseases and believed that rapture could happen soon. That night all those fears were gone but a new one emerged.
My wife, Uche, was of tender heart, very ladylike, polite and self-respecting without longer throat. Her beauty scared many lily-livered men who would initially intend to win her love but ended up being contented with a mere friendship spiced with a periodic clean minded christian hug.

In this interview and media chat, Kene C Ikwunne, The founder of Save And Secure The Child Initiative (SASCI), a non-governmental organization (NGO) which is focused in the wellbeing of the Nigerian children through intervention, capacity building and synergy talks about the challenges that the NGO face and how some guardians maltreats children and what they have done to assist. Anthony Emeka Nwosu captures this all.
As an NGO, can you tell us why you choose the child and not something else?
I think I am focusing into children because they are the future of tomorrow. The first law of nature is self-preservation, this means there should be need to survive. I am aware that is not allowed to keep a child under the age of 18 as a house maid. So, we will work with laws available to discourage such act. We will also take up any family we discover that are maltreating or abusing a child under their family care. We will also work with states assembles to introduce or amends laws that has to do with protection and the right of children to be more affective and meet up with today’s kind of child abuses.

Are you of the opinion that kids can be valued as it is done elsewhere?
For kids to be valued is an understatement, it is imperative and a must do thing. Like I said earlier. Children are heritage from God. We must treat them as such as Precious gift from God to mankind. If we beginning to nurture, cares and secure every child in Nigeria the hope for a better Nigeria will be achieved and we will also be in peace with God.
Tell us more about yourself and Nikky’s foundation?
Nikky foundation is foundation that shares some interest on the care of the Nigeria child, like her feeding program for children on the street of lagos. So, we are looking forward to a partnership with her. She has done a lot in the area of child welfare especially that of girl child and we look forward to a great synergy with the foundation.

I would not say we have any challenges. You did something in Anambra State, can we know a bit of that?
In Anambra state which is my home state. We are having very much attention and reception from the good people of Anambra state. Example of that is our partnership with Rotary club of Awka. Various assistance from Anambra broadcasting service (ABS) in term of our official inauguration which is coming on the 26th of September this 2020 at the premises of ABS Awka and also interview section they granted to us. The Governor’s wife in the person of Her excellency Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) having accepted to be in attendance on our official inauguration. Her love for children and the indigent people in the Anambra state is exceptional hence she is supporting us. Radio station like Kpakpando Fm also supporting us. So, we are having the best supports from the government and the people of Anambra state.

The issue of households having helps as kids, what do you think can be done to change this narrative?
For me there is an international best practice for keeping a child under your care. As a caregiver I think governments should have a process of documentation in that regard. Let government be aware that you a caregiver to so Child. There nothing like house maid of an underage person. You simple employ a househelp who is above the age of 18 and pay for the service. It is time we basin understand that children are heritage from God and we must take care and nurture them ok for a better nation tomorrow. In most cases from research a child abused today is likely to be an abuser of child or children tomorrow.
Baby factory, this is a disturbing trend in Nigeria especially in East. What are you doing about this?
It is unfortunate that we are trying to reduce humans especially babies to product. We call baby factory etc. where some elements that are terrible and misfit not only to Eastern people but the country general get young girls get them sired and they have baby which after nine months, these beautiful babies are sold to the highest bidder. This is just too gross, pathetic and despicable, I must say the least. Babies are not an industrial output or an end product of industries. I know is an offense in Nigeria laws ok. So, it must be vehemently discouraged and make people who engage in this act to be made to face the rat of the law. There is lay down process to legitimately adopt a child. So, people should follow the right process to adopt a child.

We will also work with states assembles to introduce or amends laws that has to do with protection and the right of children to be more affective and meet up with today’s kind of child abuses. Up with today’s kind of child abuses.
It takes a lot to run such an NGO, with such an ambitious vision, how do you hope to find this?
If you mean funding, there is no amount of money that will be enough to fund this kind of project in Nigeria considering the size and nature of our dear nation. And also, there is no amount we can say is too small for us to contribute to this project. For now, we are not looking at funding, we are just looking out for people with passion for the Nigeria child. We did not have any heavy cash anywhere to fund this initiative. The passion driving us and any member of the public that would like to support us will actually provide the funding. There is no limit to which passion cannot provide. In a nutshell passion and zeal will provide the needed funds.

The telecommunication space in the country has improved in recent years, with the apex regulatory agency, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) headed by Prof. Danbatta creating an ecosystem that has seen many telecommunication firms thrive in recent years especially in the post Covid 19 narrative. The commission as of today is a reference point in African regulation space. A situation that has brought many African countries to understudy the commission.
The Covid 19 pandemic saw many sectors of the economy crippling, not only in Nigeria, but many countries of the world, but what stood out in the case of Nigeria, was the telecommunication. The lockdown period, Nigerians during that period enjoyed uninterrupted internet and calls. Today, the issue of quality of Service (QoS) is at the front burner. Though, QoS has improved lately with dropped calls and uncompleted calls drastically reduced.
The EVC lately listed critical regulatory actions that have been taken by the Commission to slowdown the impact of Covid 19 pandemic in the telecoms sector especially in the area of service delivery. Working in line with global best practice such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) , Telecos are reporting demand spike especially in the area of data usage and volume of call.
The EVC ensured that the Telcos are well prepared for this scenario. As Nigerians are still observing social distancing, it is believed in the industry that there would be increase in the demand of telecommunication service at the same time consumers would also expect good service. The EVC has harped and reiterated that the Commission is so poised and positioned to ensure that Nigerians benefit quality services. The EVC in the last concluded virtual consumers parliament said that mobile operators needed to play their roles in sustaining quality of service delivery. He added that in collaboration with the supervising Ministry, the Commission has developed various platforms handle requests.
Resource sharing among telecommunication players is one area that the EVC is particular about, with the Right of Way issue, the Commission has played an intervention role apart from its statutory role which is regulatory. The NCC engaged the Nigerians Governors Forum (NGF) on this issue of right of way and finding a middle-ground on the rates that the Telcos and Infracos will pay. These strides paid off; various governors of states lent their support for a robust broadband infrastructure in the country.
Danbatta ensured a regulatory framework that would direct security agencies in the country to protect telecommunication facilities such as mast and fibre optic cables. He got a presidential nod to this effect, a big Landmark achievement for the present EVC. Not resting on his oars, the EVC has constantly tasked the telecommunication and internet service providers to always upgrade to the latest technologies and be in tune with the global best practice.

Gov. Uzodimma received the candidate of the Apc Imo North Senatorial Election with 8 Aspirants of APC in support of the emerged candidate.
The Imo APC Chairman, Chief Marcon Nlemigbo in his presentation of Hon. Frank Ibezim, the candidate of the APC Imo North Senatorial election to the leader of the Party and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, he admonished all APC party faithfuls to align to the choice of the entire Okigwe Zone for the betterment of the party.
Gov. Uzodimma thanked God for the victory of democracy as the primaries election was a huge success which recorded no violence.
