President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday in Lagos, emphasised the critical role of state governors in driving Nigeria’s development and prosperity, saying their leadership at the subnational level is central to achieving food security, economic prosperity and rapid national growth.

During a New Year homage by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence, the President expressed his gratitude for their support and collaboration while highlighting key areas requiring joint effort for the nation’s progress.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development. The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 per cent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands,” he said.

President Tinubu called for stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to address pressing challenges, including local government autonomy, agricultural productivity, and currency stability.

Expressing his commitment to local government development and autonomy, the President stressed its importance for grassroots development and dispelled rumours of disagreement with the governors.

“We will not fight within us. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. You can restore hope by effectively fulfilling what the people expect at the grassroots level.

“There were gossips that we had disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government. Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration. Let’s do it together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it.”

President Tinubu urged governors to prioritise agricultural growth as a pathway to economic stability.

“We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure the situation of our currency improves. Nigeria will see prosperity, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” he said.

He also urged the governors to take pride in their efforts and acknowledged their progress across the states.:

“There is no state we cannot visit and be proud of its development. We have better allocations now. Let me take the abuse; you take the privileges. Together, we will build a nation we are all proud of,” he said.

Reflecting on his leadership journey in the last 19 months, the President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to thrive given the resilience and leadership demonstrated by the administration.

“I am glad I asked for this job, and Nigerians gave me the mandate. We’ll be on this voyage together. I thank all of you for where we are today and where we are heading,” he said.

The President announced that he will be visiting Enugu State on January 4 as part of his planned visits to some states of the federation.

President Tinubu welcomed his declaration by ThisDAY newspaper as Man Of The Year.

He commended the newspaper for recognising “what they considered a failure initially, but is now a success.”

Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, described ThisDay’s decision to name President Tinubu Man of the Year as a significant endorsement of the administration’s policies.

He noted that the acknowledgement from a media outlet known for critical media coverage during the campaign reflects the tangible progress made under President Tinubu’s leadership.

“The policies are working. In agriculture, I was in Jigawa. The complaint in Jigawa was that there was a bumper harvest, but because of the strength of our currency, traders exported the harvest.

“So, most of us are encouraging ourselves to buy bumper stocks into our silos, store them for the rainy day. So, in terms of agriculture, the policy is working. We’ll continue to deepen that and ensure we are 100% sustained in food security and feed the whole of West Africa,” he said.

The governor urged the President to visit various states to see the ongoing transformations and progress firsthand.

He assured the President of the steadfast support of the governors, particularly in contributing to local security architecture to further enhance the nation’s security.

“I must confess that I have not done two years in this administration, but I’ve done more projects in two years than in the four years of my first term”, Governor Abdulrazaq said.

“We are getting more funding due to the restructuring of the economy. Yes, there is inflation, but we are overriding it,” the governor said.

In a landmark announcement, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has outlined Nigeria’s ambitious economic blueprint aimed at fostering sustainable growth and alleviating poverty. Central to this strategy is a proposed ₦50 trillion budget for 2025, underscored by strategic investments and transformative reforms.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement session at the Ministry of Finance Auditorium in Abuja, Mr. Edun emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to economic reform and inclusive growth. He highlighted the administration’s resolve to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty through sound fiscal management and innovative initiatives.

Key Achievements and Targets

Among the notable achievements of the administration are subsidy reforms, which have stabilized Nigeria’s macroeconomic environment. These reforms have reduced the fiscal deficit to 4.4% and brought the debt service-to-revenue ratio down significantly from 149% in 2023 to 67%. Additionally, foreign reserves have experienced a marked increase, now standing at $42 billion.

The government’s multi-pronged approach focuses on critical sectors such as energy, agriculture, industry, and social protection. Significant investments are being made in compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and renewable energy to transition Nigeria to a cleaner energy future. Meanwhile, large-scale farming initiatives are bolstering food security efforts, and the nation’s thriving digital economy continues to position Nigeria as a hub for African unicorn startups.

Future Projections

Looking ahead, the government projects ₦35 trillion in revenue for 2025—nearly double the levels of 2024. To achieve its ambitious goals, Nigeria targets $20 billion in investments by 2027 to fuel economic growth and job creation.

This comprehensive economic plan reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to building a prosperous and resilient Nigeria. With the groundwork being laid for sustainable development, the government aims to significantly improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.

The unveiling of this plan signals a bold step forward in Nigeria’s journey toward economic stability and social progress.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has refuted claims circulating in the media about an impending increase in service tariffs by telecommunications providers, scheduled for January 2025. The Commission clarified that no official approval has been granted for any such tariff adjustments.

Reliable sources within the NCC emphasized that the Commission adheres to a rigorous, evidence-based, and data-driven process for tariff modifications, ensuring any changes align with regulatory standards and public interest.

Similarly, officials from the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy dismissed the reports, describing them as unfounded and misleading. A senior official from the Ministry noted, “These claims are entirely untrue and uncalled for. Only a properly constituted board of the NCC has the authority to approve tariff increases, and such a decision has not been made.”

Investigations by Tech and Biz News NG revealed that the speculations are baseless, likely stemming from desperate attempts by some people to pressure for a tariff hike through unofficial means.

The NCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in all its regulatory activities, urging stakeholders and the public to disregard unverified claims while assuring that any tariff adjustments would follow established guidelines and involve extensive consultations.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been a game-changer in 2024, reaffirming its commitment to Nigerian subscribers and the telecom industry. Addressing recent speculations about a tariff hike, the Commission has reassured Nigerians that they remain at the heart of its decisions.

This year, the NCC has taken bold steps to ensure that subscribers enjoy improved services and better protection. For instance, it mandated telecom providers to resolve customer complaints within 30 minutes at service centers, saving subscribers time and enhancing their overall experience.

The Commission has also been instrumental in expanding broadband access across the country. With its drive to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025, millions of Nigerians now have better access to affordable and reliable internet, creating opportunities for businesses, education, and social inclusion.

One of the standout achievements this year has been the NCC’s efforts to promote digital inclusion. Through partnerships and campaigns, the Commission has brought internet services to underserved communities, giving more Nigerians a chance to participate in the digital economy.

Cybersecurity has also been a top priority. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms, the NCC introduced stronger measures to protect subscribers from online threats, ensuring that the digital space remains safe for all users.

Economically, the NCC has created a vibrant environment for growth. By fostering competition and attracting new investments, it has helped reduce costs for subscribers while keeping the industry robust and innovative.

In response to rumors of tariff hikes, the NCC has reassured Nigerians that any decisions about tariffs will be transparent and in line with the realities of the economy. The Commission encourages subscribers to ignore unverified information and trust in its dedication to their welfare.

As the year progresses, the NCC continues to prove that it is not just a regulator but a partner to Nigerians, ensuring that the telecom sector remains dynamic, inclusive, and subscriber-focused.

Engr. Roberta Edu, the Founder and CEO of Moppet Baby Food, has reiterated her commitment to providing healthy, organic nutrition for infants amid growing concerns about the quality of some imported baby food brands available in Africa.

Reacting to recent discussions sparked by a foreign doctor’s review of a popular international baby formula, Edu stated, “A lot of people have sent me WhatsApp videos and tagged me on Facebook regarding this product. However, I don’t engage in drag marketing. Moppet Foods isn’t even actively seeking new customers; we’re consistently sold out.”

She highlighted the intense demand for her company’s products, emphasizing, “Our factory is operational as we speak, and workers are busy producing items to fulfill outstanding orders from last year’s holiday season. The demand is a testament to parents who prioritize their children’s health by choosing Moppet Baby Food.”

Edu revealed that Moppet Foods’ success comes largely from organic reach and website-driven sales, adding, “I haven’t posted about Moppet in a while, and we’ve even turned off our advertisements. Yet, digital sales remain massive.”

In an effort to educate parents, Edu urged them to scrutinize the ingredients of baby food products. “Look at the ingredients list on any baby formula you’re using. If you see names that don’t represent real food, those are additives and chemicals. At Moppet, all our products are made with biofortified, natural, organic ingredients – real grains, real fruits, and real vegetables. We add no chemicals, ensuring that babies get the best nutrition.”

Concluding her statement, Edu reassured parents, “Moppet is real food for real babies.”

Moppet Baby Food, a proudly Nigerian company, continues to set the standard for safe, nutritious, and organic baby food options, empowering parents to make healthier choices for their children.
