Stella Babatope is a dynamic biomedical scientist whose innovative research and advocacy efforts are reshaping healthcare, with a particular focus on reproductive health, diabetes, cancer, and the regulation of pharmaceutical use. Her journey, which began at Babcock University, has set her apart as a pioneering figure in her field, making her contributions invaluable to both local and global health.
In 2019, while an undergraduate at Babcock University, Babatope conducted groundbreaking research on the health risks of contraceptive abuse. Her study specifically addressed the long-term, unregulated use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs), which are widely used but often misunderstood. Babatope’s research on contraceptive abuse, particularly among young girls, highlighted the physiological and biological consequences, including the development of cardiometabolic syndrome. She also explored potential solutions, including the therapeutic properties of Ganoderma lucidum, a medicinal mushroom used in Asia, showing its potential to alleviate the adverse effects of contraceptives.
“Contraceptives are an essential part of reproductive health management, but when abused, they can have severe health repercussions. My research aims to shed light on the need for proper education on their use and the potential risks associated with their misuse,” Babatope explained.
Her research went beyond reproductive health, uncovering significant findings on how unregulated drug use, especially among youth, can lead to complications such as glucose dysregulation, obesity, and insulin resistance. Babatope’s work called for improved drug literacy and stronger regulations to ensure the safe use of contraceptives, which she believes are vital to protecting public health.
As an active member of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria at Babcock University, Babatope worked tirelessly to educate the public about the role of medical laboratory science in healthcare. She played a key role in organizing the Medical Laboratory Science Week, where she led presentations that demystified laboratory diagnostics and their importance in modern medicine.
After graduating, Babatope transitioned seamlessly into her professional career as a licensed medical laboratory scientist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). There, she honed her skills in diagnostic testing and patient care, contributing to the hospital’s work in improving health outcomes. “Patient-centered care is at the heart of my work. Every test I conduct, every patient I help, is an opportunity to make a real difference,” she said.
Babatope’s commitment to advancing her knowledge led her to the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the United Kingdom, where she pursued a Master’s in Molecular Medicine. Her research at UEA focused on diabetic foot ulcers, leading to the discovery of new protein markers that could improve wound healing in diabetic patients. Her research here laid the groundwork for further investigations into molecular medicine and patient care.
Now, as a doctoral student in the United States on a funded scholarship, Babatope’s research is focused on anticancer drug resistance, particularly in pancreatic cancer. Her work in the U.S. has already led to promising discoveries, and she continues to push boundaries in cancer research. “My goal is to make a real difference in how we treat cancer and find new, more effective ways to help patients survive,” she says.
In addition to her research achievements, Babatope is a passionate advocate for health education and pharmaceutical drug literacy. She believes that improved public knowledge about the safe use of drugs, especially contraceptives, is crucial to preventing health complications. “Education is key. We need to teach people, especially young girls, about the risks of drug misuse. Stronger regulations and better education are the first steps in ensuring safer practices,” she urges.
Babatope’s advocacy also extends to the broader systemic issues affecting research in Nigeria. She has been vocal about the need for improved funding, better intellectual property protections, and stronger international collaborations to elevate Nigerian research on the global stage. She argues that Nigeria’s healthcare system, which currently allocates only 3% of its GDP to healthcare, needs more resources to foster innovation and ensure better healthcare delivery. “We have the potential to lead in biomedical and pharmaceutical research, but we need the right resources and frameworks to make it happen,” Babatope stresses.
