Entrepreneur and ecosystem builder David Ogebe has highlighted what he describes as a fundamental gap in Africa’s talent development systems, calling for a shift from simply training individuals to building stronger problem-solving capabilities across the continent.

Ogebe, who works with global institutions including partners such as the World Bank, shared insights from recent conversations with ecosystem stakeholders, noting that while Africa has no shortage of skilled and ambitious talent, there remains a deeper challenge in how individuals are trained to think and approach complex problems.

He argued that the current education and training systems across many African contexts have historically emphasized rote learning, exam performance, certification, and compliance, rather than fostering curiosity, independent thinking, and intellectual risk-taking. According to him, this has contributed to a mismatch between the capabilities of available talent and the expectations of global systems that prioritize critical thinking and innovation.

Ogebe described the issue not as a lack of intelligence or potential, but as a structural limitation in how talent is developed. He suggested that many individuals are capable of executing assigned tasks but may struggle when required to independently analyze problems, challenge assumptions, and develop original solutions without guided instruction.

He further emphasized that addressing this gap requires a broader ecosystem approach rather than isolated interventions. This includes redesigning learning environments, encouraging earlier exposure to problem-solving frameworks, and shifting evaluation metrics from output alone to include thinking processes and initiative.

The ecosystem builder noted that such a transformation would require long-term investment and collaboration among educators, policymakers, private sector actors, and development partners. He stressed that building a “thinking ecosystem” would ultimately produce individuals who are not only employable but also capable of creating opportunities, driving innovation, and contributing to economic growth.

Ogebe’s remarks add to ongoing conversations within Africa’s technology and innovation sectors about how to better align education, training, and workforce development with the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

He concluded that prioritizing problem-solving over procedural learning could be a critical step toward unlocking more sustainable and scalable impact across the continent’s talent landscape.
