The AI Nigeria Conference 2026 brought together leaders in technology, finance, and innovation to discuss the future of artificial intelligence in Africa under the theme “Responsible AI Beyond Innovation.”

Dr. Stanley Jacob, President of the Fintech Association of Nigeria (FintechNGR) and Vice President (Western Africa) of the Africa Fintech Network, delivered a dual keynote address. He spoke on behalf of Wole Adeniyi FCA, Board Chair of AI in Nigeria, and in his own capacity as FintechNGR President.

Mr. Adeniyi’s message underscored the urgency of responsible innovation, warning that “innovation without responsibility is just speed without direction.” He emphasized Nigeria’s need to actively shape AI governance, policy frameworks, and infrastructure to ensure the technology reflects African realities.

In his personal address, Dr. Jacob reaffirmed FintechNGR’s commitment to supporting AI-driven fintechs across Nigeria and Africa. He acknowledged the challenges these startups face, including regulatory uncertainty, infrastructure gaps, and limited access to patient capital, while pledging concrete steps to strengthen the ecosystem.

Among FintechNGR’s commitments for 2026 are:

  • Establishing an AI Fintech Working Group with a standing committee on policy, standards, and advocacy.
  • Engaging regulators to develop AI sandbox frameworks for test-and-learn opportunities.
  • Expanding continental connectivity through the Africa Fintech Network to link Nigerian AI fintechs with counterparts across Africa.
  • Building talent pipelines via university-industry partnerships to grow homegrown AI expertise.

Dr. Jacob highlighted Africa’s unique position, with the world’s youngest population, a rapidly expanding mobile money market, and pressing financial inclusion needs. He stressed that AI offers transformative solutions to these challenges and that Nigeria must ensure the right conditions to build, scale, and export African-led innovations.

The conference reinforced the message that Africa’s role in shaping global AI is not optional but essential.
