Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has called on African leaders to uphold the values of courage, service, and accountability, as he delivered the keynote address commemorating the 50th anniversary of the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated Heads of State.
Speaking at a ceremony that brought together African leaders, dignitaries, family, and friends, Prof. Osinbajo highlighted the enduring relevance of the theme he borrowed from General Muhammed’s address at the Organization of African Unity just thirty-four days before his death: “Africa has come of age.”
“Africa must shape its own destiny with courage, clarity, and an unshakeable belief in our collective capacity,” Prof. Osinbajo said. “Fifty years on, General Murtala Muhammed’s life still calls us to the higher standards of service, courage, and accountability that nations are built on.”
The event attracted an impressive array of former leaders and distinguished guests, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, John Agyekum Kufuor, Ernest Bai Koroma, and Dr Joyce Banda. Also present were Mrs Ajoke Murtala Muhammed, widow of the late general; former Vice President Namadi Sambo; His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; Dr Aisha Muhammed Oyebode; Ambassador Joe Keshi; and Dr Dionisio Manuel de Fonseca, special envoy of the President of Angola.
Prof. Osinbajo urged current and future leaders to be guided by the ideals of General Muhammed, emphasizing that true leadership requires integrity and a commitment to the welfare of the people.
“May his memory remain a blessing, and may the ideals he stood for continue to inspire leadership worthy of our people,” he added.
The commemoration served not only as a tribute to a fallen leader but also as a rallying call for African leaders to continue striving for the principles that underpin strong, accountable governance.
