Nigeria, Norway Explore Partnership on Digital Infrastructure, AI and Clean Energy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified efforts to strengthen international partnerships aimed at advancing the country’s digital transformation, as the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, met with Norway’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Svein Baera.

The high-level meeting focused on critical areas affecting Nigeria’s digital and economic future, including broadband infrastructure, digital talent development, artificial intelligence (AI), and clean energy solutions.

According to Dr. Tijani, the discussions were part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to address key challenges in the country’s digital ecosystem, particularly limited internet access, skills gaps in the technology sector, and the need for sustainable energy to support digital growth.

Broadband expansion remains a major priority for the government, as millions of Nigerians still lack reliable internet access, especially in rural communities. Improved connectivity is seen as essential for boosting education, business growth, innovation, and access to digital services.

The talks also addressed the development of digital talent, with a focus on equipping young Nigerians with skills in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. With the global economy increasingly driven by digital innovation, the government is seeking partnerships that will help train a workforce capable of competing internationally.

Clean energy was another key issue discussed, as Nigeria continues to explore sustainable power solutions to support its growing digital infrastructure. Reliable and environmentally friendly energy is considered vital for data centers, telecom networks, and technology hubs across the country.

Dr. Tijani noted that Nigeria has built a strong relationship with countries in the Nordic region over the past year and welcomed Norway’s interest in supporting the country’s digital transformation goals. He expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to concrete commitments that promote economic growth, improve digital inclusion, and strengthen Nigeria’s technology sector.

The meeting reflects Nigeria’s ongoing push to attract international investment and technical cooperation to address long-standing development challenges through innovation and digital solutions.
