Former Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, has responded to criticisms attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reaffirming his support for fiscal discipline and transparent governance in the state.
In a strongly worded statement, Odili said he had remained silent for a long time out of restraint, but was now compelled to speak after his silence was repeatedly misinterpreted as fear. He explained that his comments were not driven by personal hostility but by a commitment to truth and responsible governance.
Odili stressed that governance should not be treated as a personal inheritance and that public resources must not be used to fund private ambitions. He noted that while he and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu governed during the same political era, each leader made different choices regarding their political paths.
He clarified that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had not declared war on any individual but had instead acted to protect the state’s treasury. According to Odili, the governor’s actions have led to significant improvements in internally generated revenue, better infrastructure development, and a renewed focus on public value rather than personal interests.
Odili questioned claims that fiscal discipline amounted to betrayal, stating that his support for previous administrations was based on stability, not loyalty to excesses. He emphasized that leadership requires wisdom, which does not diminish with age.
The former governor also highlighted the temporary nature of political power, noting that while titles and influence fade, historical records remain. He argued that political progress is built collectively and that gratitude should not prevent leaders from speaking out against mismanagement.
While acknowledging that his own tenure was not without flaws, Odili said he governed with restraint, built strong institutions, and left behind lasting legacies.
He concluded by calling for peace, responsible leadership, and a governance approach that allows development to thrive without conflict. Odili reaffirmed his loyalty to the people of Rivers State, stating that their welfare remains his primary commitment.
