The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, has emphasized the importance of human capacity development in building a sustainable energy sector in Nigeria.
Aliyu made this known while highlighting the progress of the NextGen RESCO programme, an initiative designed to equip young Nigerians with practical, hands-on experience in the renewable energy industry. According to him, participants—popularly referred to as “Next Genners”—are gaining real-world exposure by working directly with energy companies rather than learning solely in classroom settings.
Under the programme, young professionals have been deployed to companies such as Premplus, StarTimes Solar, and Treznergy Solutions Limited, where they are actively involved in the design, deployment, operation, and maintenance of power systems. Aliyu noted that the participants are entrusted with real responsibilities and are contributing meaningfully to the operations of their host companies.
He further explained that the long-term benefits of the initiative extend beyond individual skill development. As participants grow in competence and confidence, they help strengthen Nigeria’s broader energy ecosystem, supporting renewable energy deployment, local operations, innovation, and long-term sector resilience.
“The programme is a critical step toward closing the talent gap, supporting local industry, and preparing the next generation to lead Nigeria’s energy transition with competence and conviction,” Aliyu said.
He added that Nigeria’s power sector transformation is already underway, driven by young professionals who are actively learning, working, and building within the industry.
The NextGen RESCO programme is part of the REA’s broader efforts to ensure sustainable rural electrification and a resilient energy future for the country.
