Peter Obi Calls for Dialogue and Political Solution Following Nnamdi Kanu’s Conviction

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reacted to the conviction of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, urging the Nigerian government to adopt political dialogue rather than coercion in addressing the underlying issues.

In a statement shared on his official LinkedIn page, Obi described the development as “unfortunate,” warning that it could worsen national tensions at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and the effects of poor governance.

Obi reiterated his long-held view that Kanu’s arrest and prolonged detention reflected a failure of leadership. According to him, the concerns raised by Kanu were neither new nor impossible to resolve, and should have been addressed through “wisdom, empathy, and a willingness to listen.”

He argued that other nations frequently deploy political solutions, negotiated settlements, or amnesty when legal processes alone fail to advance peace and stability, insisting that Nigeria should not be an exception. Applying the law mechanically, he said, does not amount to effective leadership in times of national strain.

“The government’s approach has only deepened mistrust and created avoidable distractions,” Obi stated, adding that the situation resembles “a man trapped in a hole who keeps digging deeper.”

He emphasized that reconciliation, inclusiveness, and constructive engagement remain the only sustainable path toward national unity.

Obi called on the Presidency, the Council of State, and respected statesmen across the country to intervene and help facilitate a lasting solution. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful for peace and eventual reconciliation, regardless of their views on the court’s decision.

The reaction adds to ongoing national debate surrounding Kanu’s case and its implications for Nigeria’s political stability, rule of law, and social cohesion.
