NNPC Limited is amplifying Nigeria’s call for a fair and achievable global energy transition as world leaders, climate negotiators, and energy stakeholders gather in Belém, Brazil, for the COP30 climate conference.
At a high-level coordination meeting between the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Haruna Abdurrahman, Managing Director of NNPC New Energy Limited, led the company’s delegation to push for a unified stance among energy-producing nations.
The meeting brought together ministers, technical experts, and negotiators from member states of both organisations to review the evolving climate agenda and align their positions ahead of key negotiations. The discussions centred on ensuring that the global shift to cleaner energy sources reflects the economic realities, developmental priorities, and energy security needs of producing nations—many of which depend heavily on hydrocarbons for revenue, jobs, and national development.
Abdurrahman emphasised that while Nigeria remains committed to climate action, the transition must be balanced, inclusive, and rooted in equity. He noted that developing producers cannot be expected to adopt the same timelines and pathways as advanced economies without access to financing, technology, and infrastructure that support cleaner energy deployment.
Participants at the OPEC-GECF session underscored the importance of constructive dialogue among producers, particularly at a time when global climate policies are becoming more stringent. They argued that coordinated engagement is essential to prevent frameworks that could undermine energy affordability, disrupt supply stability, or impose disproportionate economic burdens on developing countries.
They also highlighted the need for climate agreements that recognise natural gas as a vital transition fuel, support investments in low-carbon technologies, and preserve the right of nations to responsibly harness their natural resources while pursuing emissions reduction goals.
NNPC Limited reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with global partners to advance a transition that achieves decarbonisation without compromising economic growth or access to reliable energy. The company’s participation at COP30 signals Nigeria’s intent to shape a climate agenda that is not only environmentally responsible but also economically just and strategically realistic for producing nations.
