NNPC Limited Commissions 3D Printing Capabilities and Digital FabLab to Drive Innovation in Nigeria’s Energy Sector

In a landmark move to advance technological innovation in Nigeria’s energy sector, NNPC Limited has officially commissioned two cutting-edge projects at its Research, Technology & Innovation (RTI) Division. The initiatives include the development of 3D printing capabilities and the establishment of a Digital Fabrication Lab (FabLab) MakerSpace, positioning NNPC as a leading hub for research, innovation, and industrial transformation.

The commissioning ceremony was led by Executive Vice President, Business Services (EVP, BS), Sophia Mbakwe, alongside Chief Innovation Officer, Rasheed Ojulari, who highlighted the strategic importance of these projects for the company and the broader energy ecosystem in Nigeria.

The newly deployed 3D printing capabilities are designed to support advanced manufacturing and rapid prototyping, enabling NNPC to design and produce components more efficiently, reduce operational downtime, and enhance technological self-reliance within the oil and gas sector. The initiative also lays the groundwork for local innovation in materials engineering, renewable energy components, and digital manufacturing solutions.

Meanwhile, the Digital Fabrication Lab (FabLab) MakerSpace is set to become a hub for experimentation, research, and skills development. The lab will provide engineers, researchers, and innovators with access to state-of-the-art tools, digital design software, and prototyping equipment, fostering collaboration and accelerating the development of sustainable solutions for the energy industry.

Speaking at the event, Mbakwe and Ojulari emphasized that these initiatives reflect NNPC Limited’s unwavering commitment to driving sustainable growth, nurturing innovation, and enhancing Nigeria’s technological capacity. The projects are part of the company’s broader strategy to position itself as a catalyst for industrial transformation, promote knowledge-driven solutions, and contribute to national economic development.

With these initiatives, NNPC Limited demonstrates a forward-looking approach that aligns with global technological trends, promotes skills development, and strengthens Nigeria’s competitive edge in the energy sector. By embracing modern technologies and innovative research, the company is poised to transform operational efficiency, encourage local content development, and expand opportunities for youth and tech entrepreneurs in the country.

The launch of the 3D printing infrastructure and Digital FabLab represents a significant milestone in NNPC Limited’s vision to lead energy sector innovation in Africa, ensuring that research and development remain central to achieving sustainable growth and industrial excellence.
