President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to upholding religious liberty, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among citizens of all faiths, emphasizing that the country remains a democracy governed by strong constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and belief.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Presidency, President Tinubu noted that since 2023, his administration has maintained open and active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders, working collaboratively to address national challenges and strengthen unity across faiths and regions.
He stressed that the characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect the nation’s reality, pointing out that the government continues to make consistent and sincere efforts to safeguard religious freedoms for all citizens.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,”
President Tinubu affirmed.
The President reiterated that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees the protection of citizens regardless of their religion, and that the administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen cooperation and mutual understanding on protecting communities of all faiths.
He reaffirmed that under his leadership, Nigeria will continue to champion inclusivity, unity, and respect for diversity, upholding the country’s long-standing tradition of peaceful religious coexistence.
