Abuja, Nigeria — The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has hosted the Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS), Mr. Obafemi Banigbe, as well as members of his leadership team, to discuss enhanced collaboration on data protection and privacy compliance.
EMTS, the current operator of T2Mobile (formerly 9Mobile), visited the Commission to reaffirm its commitment to aligning with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act) and to explore partnership opportunities with the NDPC.
During the visit, Mr. Banigbe praised the NDPC under Dr. Olatunji’s leadership for its continued efforts in strengthening Nigeria’s data governance landscape through progressive regulatory frameworks. He highlighted EMTS’s ongoing initiatives, including plans to localise customer data by deploying local cloud infrastructure — a move consistent with the Commission’s data sovereignty mandate.
He further disclosed that EMTS has deployed modern cybersecurity tools to safeguard digital assets and remains committed to integrating privacy safeguards across all business processes. “We are ready to collaborate with the Commission and contribute as a strategic partner in advancing the national data protection ecosystem,” Banigbe said.
In his remarks, Dr. Olatunji commended T2Mobile/EMTS for its proactive approach to compliance and openness to collaboration. He emphasized that telecom operators and other key stakeholders hold critical responsibility in protecting citizens’ data and sustaining trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.
The NDPC boss underscored the importance of capacity building and awareness, noting that human error remains a significant vulnerability in data protection. He also reiterated that fostering public trust in Nigerian digital services aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as enshrined in the NDP Act.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deeper collaboration, with discussions focused on capacity development, compliance support, and strengthening Nigeria’s data privacy environment.
