In a move to enhance inclusivity and promote wider understanding of data rights among Nigerians, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched the Igbo version of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act) in Enugu State.
The unveiling, which took place in collaboration with Meta Inc., marks another milestone in the Commission’s drive to make data protection laws more accessible to citizens across linguistic and literacy divides.
Speaking on behalf of the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, Ms. Fatima Sanni of the Research and Development Department emphasized the significance of the translation project. She commended Meta Inc. for its partnership and also appreciated the support of the Enugu State Government and the Enugu SME Agency toward the successful execution of the initiative.
Ms. Sanni noted that translating the NDP Act into local languages such as Igbo advances inclusivity and empowers citizens to better understand their rights and obligations as data subjects.
“This effort ensures that every Nigerian, regardless of literacy level or language background, can engage meaningfully with the nation’s data protection framework,” she said.
She further explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes digital inclusion, citizen protection, and the development of a robust data-driven economy.
Ms. Sanni also called for the broad dissemination of the Igbo version of the Act across communities in the South-East, stressing that greater awareness of data protection principles would strengthen the culture of privacy and responsible data use in Nigeria.
The event underscored the NDPC’s commitment to ensuring that data protection in Nigeria is not just a legal framework for the few, but a shared responsibility understood by all.
