🇳🇬 Governor Sanwo-Olu Commends National Assembly on 1999 Constitution Review, Calls for a People-Centered Framework

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for their dedication to ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and people-oriented review process.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the commendation during his participation at the National Assembly Retreat on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, where lawmakers and stakeholders converged to discuss far-reaching amendments aimed at deepening governance and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Governor praised the joint committee for its openness and collaborative approach, describing the constitutional review exercise as “a crucial step toward renewing the bond between government and the people.”

“I commend the Committee for its commitment to a transparent and inclusive review process,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “This effort goes beyond updating a document — it is about strengthening the bond between government and the people we serve.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that constitutional reform should reflect the evolving aspirations of Nigerians, ensuring justice, accountability, equity, and sustainable development across all regions. He added that the ongoing review offers a historic opportunity to build a more responsive and representative governance structure.

“Together, we can shape a Constitution that truly reflects the hopes and realities of every Nigerian,” he said.

The retreat, attended by legislators, state executives, civil society leaders, and legal experts, focused on critical areas including fiscal federalism, devolution of powers, judicial reforms, state policing, and gender inclusion.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s participation underscores Lagos State’s active role in advancing constitutional dialogue and national unity, as the state continues to champion collaborative governance and democratic reforms that empower citizens and strengthen the federation.
