Abia State is once again taking the lead in innovation and sustainability as Governor Alex Otti’s administration prepares to launch the Abia Green Shuttle Service — an Electric Vehicle (EV) public transport system designed to transform mobility across the state.
The initiative positions Abia as a trailblazer in sustainable transportation in Nigeria, aligning with global best practices and the state’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting environmental responsibility.
As part of the first phase, the state government has acquired 20 electric buses and constructed 10 solar-powered charging stations equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities. The buses are expected to begin operations before the end of the year. A second batch of 20 electric buses and 10 additional charging stations is projected to arrive early next year, as part of the target to deploy 100 EV buses across Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.
Modern bus terminals are already under construction in these cities, while new bus stops in Aba and Umuahia are nearing completion. These facilities are designed to ensure comfort, safety, and efficiency for passengers as routes and operational frameworks are being finalized.
According to Ctz. Njoku Ukoha, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, “Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and forward-thinking. The Abia Green Shuttle initiative reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to modernising transportation, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving the quality of life for every Abian.”
He added that the project will not only reduce emissions and fuel dependence but also “create jobs, enhance safety, and stimulate economic growth across the state.”
Governor Otti’s Green Shuttle project represents a bold step toward a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive transportation future for Abia State — a model of progress and sustainability for the rest of the country.
