In a significant step towards bolstering data protection awareness in Nigeria’s judicial sector, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has conducted a capacity-building workshop for Fellows and ICT staff of the National Judicial Institute (NJI). The workshop follows a recent high-level visit by NDPC officials to the NJI, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing data privacy and security within the judiciary.

Speaking at the opening session, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, expressed satisfaction with the swift implementation of this collaborative initiative. Dr. Olatunji highlighted the workshop as a testament to Honourable Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi’s dedication to equipping NJI Fellows with the necessary knowledge to navigate the evolving data protection landscape. He noted that Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem is gaining global recognition, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda aimed at fostering foreign investment and economic growth.

The Administrator of the NJI, Honourable Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, commended the NDPC for its proactive efforts in educating judicial officers and ICT personnel on data privacy and security. In his welcome remarks, he acknowledged the increasing global emphasis on data protection, recognizing data as a critical asset in modern governance. He praised the partnership between the NJI and the NDPC, emphasizing the importance of instilling a culture of privacy and compliance within the judicial system.
