In a move to strengthen data protection and privacy standards within Nigeria’s government institutions, the National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, led a high-powered delegation to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) in Abuja. The courtesy visit, which took place recently, was aimed at fostering collaboration between the NDPC and the OSGF under the leadership of Senator George Akume.
Dr. Olatunji provided an overview of the NDPC’s establishment, tracing its journey since the Nigeria Data Protection Act was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. He highlighted the Commission’s milestones, including the recent unveiling of the globally recognized National Certification for Data Protection Officers (DPOs). The certification aims to set a benchmark for professional excellence in data protection across the country and beyond.
During the meeting, Dr. Olatunji proposed a comprehensive data protection capacity-building program for OSGF staff, emphasizing the importance of equipping them with the knowledge and tools to navigate the increasingly data-driven ecosystem. He stressed that such initiatives are critical for embedding a culture of data protection and privacy in the daily operations of government offices.
In his remarks, Senator Akume lauded the NDPC for its transformative efforts under the leadership of Dr. Olatunji. He expressed satisfaction with the international recognition of the National Certification for DPOs, describing it as a significant step towards aligning Nigeria with global data protection standards.
The SGF also welcomed the capacity-building proposal, noting its potential to enhance the proficiency of his staff in handling sensitive data securely. He reaffirmed the OSGF’s commitment to supporting the NDPC’s mandate and emphasized the critical need for data protection to become a deeply ingrained culture across all sectors in Nigeria.
