Anambra State Launches Plastic Waste Recycling Challenge: Community with Highest Collection Wins One Million Naira

Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, announced an ambitious plan to create over 5,000 jobs through waste and plastic recycling. This initiative is part of the second edition of the Anambra Community Plastic Waste Recycling Challenge, organized in collaboration with the Anambra State Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA).

Speaking in Awka, the state capital, Odimegwu emphasized that the administration, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, aims to recover 100,000 tonnes of plastic waste in 2024. The recycling efforts will help sanitize the environment and address ecological challenges such as erosion.

“The challenge will engage our 179 communities in a spirited competition to collect the most plastic waste. It will include awareness programs, clean-up drives, and innovative solutions to plastic waste management. We will recognize and reward the communities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to a cleaner Anambra,” he stated.

The prizes for this year’s challenge include:

– First Prize: One million Naira
– Second Prize: Five hundred thousand Naira

– **Third Prize**: Two hundred and fifty thousand Naira

This initiative aims to foster economic growth by creating indirect jobs in the industrial and environmental sectors while promoting sustainability.
