Industry Stakeholders Call for Pragmatic Approach to Telecom Tariff Adjustment

post-image

Telecom industry stakeholders have urged a balanced approach to the recently approved tariff adjustment by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), emphasizing the need to sustain operations while minimizing the financial burden on consumers.

Speaking on behalf of industry players, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and other key stakeholders acknowledged the economic realities necessitating the tariff review. They highlighted the mounting operational costs driven by inflation, foreign exchange instability, and rising energy prices, which have put immense pressure on service providers.

“The telecom sector is facing unprecedented financial strain, with the cost of network maintenance, equipment procurement, and power generation increasing exponentially. Without adjustments, operators will struggle to maintain service quality and expand network infrastructure,” a senior industry executive stated.

While recognizing consumer concerns, stakeholders assured that the approved 50 percent tariff hike represents a ceiling rather than a blanket increase. Market competition,…

Peter Obi Decries Pension Crisis After Encounter with Struggling Retiree

post-image

Labour Party presidential hopeful and philanthropist, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the state of pensioners in Nigeria following a distressing encounter with an elderly woman.

During his official visit to Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences, Nsukka, Obi recounted how he was approached by a retired civil servant struggling to share her ordeal. While others attempted to dismiss her, he chose to listen.

According to Obi, the woman, who had dedicated her productive years to public service, revealed that her pension had not been paid for some time. She had also been hospitalized for over a week, unable to afford food or medical bills.

“I felt a surge of anger and pity,” Obi stated. “Anger at leaders like me, who, out of greed and desperation for material acquisition, have made life a living hell for others by denying them the fruits of their labor. And pity for the poor elderly woman, and…

The Sahel Can Revolutionize Renewable Energy Access and Affordability Up to the Last Mile (By Reshmi Theckethil)

post-image

By Reshmi Theckethil, Lead Portfolio, Climate Action, Disaster Risk Reduction, Energy, and Resilience | Sahel Resilience Project Manager, UNDP Sub-Regional Hub for West and Central Africa (www.UNDP.org).

Imagine a Sahel region where every household, school, and hospital has access to clean, affordable energy—where renewable power not only serves homes but also drives economic transformation. Given the region’s rich solar, wind, and hydro resources, this vision is achievable. With one of the highest potential for solar energy production globally, at 13.9 billion kWh/year compared to the global consumption of 20 billion kWh/year, the Sahel’s renewable energy capacity remains underutilised. Currently, over 55% of energy production is dominated by fossil fuels like oil and gas, while renewable sources remain marginal.

Over the last two decades, primary energy demand in almost half of the Sahel countries has grown by more than 4% annually [1]. However, urban areas benefit disproportionately, leaving…

Overuse of AI May Lead to Cognitive Decline and Skill Degradation, Experts Warn

post-image

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, experts are raising concerns about the potential downsides of overreliance on AI-driven tools. While AI can enhance productivity, excessive dependence on it for tasks like writing, decision-making, and problem-solving may have unintended consequences.

Cognitive Decline and Skill Degradation

Analysts warn that constantly using AI instead of engaging in critical thinking and writing can lead to skill erosion. Just as muscles weaken without exercise, the human brain thrives on mental challenges. “The more you rely on AI to generate ideas and content, the less your brain is engaged, potentially leading to cognitive decline over time,” said a neuroscience researcher.

Some studies suggest that intellectual laziness—using AI for tasks one is capable of doing—can reduce neural activity. While AI learns and evolves from user input, the human brain, when underutilized, risks losing its sharpness.

Loss of Authenticity and Originality

Experts also caution that AI-generated content often…
